2. ABSTRACTS OF YEAR 2002 ATIP TECHNOLOGY REPORTS

ATIP02.014: Japanese Government S&T Funding

ABSTRACT: This report summarizes Japanese national funding in FY 2001/2 on science and technology. This funding is determined according to the basic design discussed on the Council for Science and Technology Policy, Cabinet Office. Year 2002 funding on science and technology increased 2.0 percent compared to 2001. Funding of four major fields, life science, information and communication, environment and nanotechnology and materials, have highest priorities. The report also details funding for nanotechnology projects.

ATIP02.015: The APNF Inaugural Conference

ABSTRACT: The Inaugural Conference of the Asia Pacific Nanotechnology Forum (APNF) was held in Tsukuba, Ibaraki prefecture, Japan, February 26 – 28, 2002. Key persons in nanotechnology throughout the Pacific Rim attended the conference. The conference provided a good overview of nanotechnology efforts of corporations, governments and laboratories of throughout the Pacific Rim. Valuable insights from venture capitalists and entrepreneurs were also provided. This report summarizes key conference presentations and provides estimates of nanotech funding around the Pacific.
